Day 2 - jog @ Yarra River
Morning Highlight:
It was early at the morning around 6 o’clock. Sun has brightly shines, but the weather is still cold. We broke that cold morning by walking from Hotel to Flinder Station across the Federal Square, through Yara river and along its side, made a circle round, passing the Melbourne sea-life and back to Hotel to get a breakfast.
Sampai Flinders, kita tidak masuk ke dalam, just passing and took some snapshot :-)
Fact Sheet from mas Wiki
Flinders Street Station—colloquially shortened to simply Flinders Street or sometimes FSS—is a central commuterrailway station at the corner of Flinders andSwanston streets in Melbourne, Victoria,Australia. It serves the entire metropolitan rail network. Backing onto the city reach of the Yarra River in the heart of the city, the complex covers two whole city blocks and extends from Swanston Street to Queen Street.
Each weekday, over 110,000 commuters and 1,500 trains pass through the station. It is the most used metropolitan railway station in Melbourne, in 2009 there was an average of 85,100 passenger boardings per day. Flinders Street is serviced by Metro'ssuburban services, and V/Line regional services to Gippsland.
It was the first railway station in an Australian city, the terminus for the first use of steam rail in Australia and the world's busiest passenger station in the late 1920s.
The main station building, completed in 1909, is a cultural icon to Melbourne, with its prominent dome, arched entrance, tower and clocks it is one of the city's most recognisable landmarks. As such it is frequently used to symbolise the city and is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. The Melburnian idiom "I'll meet you under the clocks", refers to the row of clocks above the main entrance, which indicate the time-tabled time of departure for trains on each line; another idiom "I'll meet you on the steps", refers to the wide staircase underneath these clocks. Flinders Street Station is responsible for two of Melbourne's busiest pedestrian crossings, both across Flinders Street, including one of Melbourne's few pedestrian scrambles.
Lalu kemudian kami jalan sedikit menyeberangi Yarra Rivers, persis di jembatannya, took this shot:
lalu turun di dekat Arts Precints untuk .... Foto duluww
Dan lagi...hehe....
Kemudian menyusuri Yara River… di daerah ini ada Southgate Mall dan beberapa hotel yang high-end, serta café-café yang berderet. Wah seru juga kalau malem-malem nongkrong disini…. Kami menemukan paling tidak 2 bike rental sepanjang Yarra ini, waduh … should try it on sometimes… masalahnya, kita belum tahu rent helmet-nya dimana.
Fact Sheet from mas Wiki
The Yarra River, originally Berrern, Birr-arrung, Bay-ray-rung, Birarang and Birrarung is a river in east-central Victoria, Australia. The lower stretches of the river is where the city of Melbourne was established in 1835 and today Greater Melbourne dominates and influences the landscape of its lower reaches. From its source in the Yarra Ranges, it flows 242 km west through the Yarra Valleywhich opens out into plains as it winds its way through Greater Melbourne before emptying into Hobsons Bay in northernmostPort Phillip.
The river was a major food source and meeting place for indigenous Australiansfrom prehistoric times. Shortly after thearrival of European settlers land clearing forced the remaining Wurundjeri to neighbouring territories and away from the river. Originally called Birrarung by theWurundjeri, the current name was mistranslated from another Wurundjeri term; Yarra Yarra.
The river was utilised primarily for agriculture by early European settlers. The landscape of the river has changed dramatically since 1835. The course has been progressively disrupted and the river widened in places. The first of manyCrossings of the Yarra River to facilitatetransport was built in Princes Bridge. Beginning with the Victorian gold rush it was extensively mined, creating the Pound Bend Tunnel in Warrandyte, and the Big and LittlePeninsula Tunnels above Warburton . Widening and dams, like the Upper Yarra Reservoir have helped protect Melbourne from major flooding. The catchment's upper reaches are also affected by logging.Industrialisation ultimately led to the destruction of the marshlands at the confluence of the Yarra and MaribyrnongRivers in the area around Coode Island inWest Melbourne.
Today, the mouth and including Swanson and Appleton Docks are used for container shipping by the Port of Melbourne, the busiest on the continent. The city reach which is inaccessible to larger watercraft, has seen increased use for both transport andrecreational boating (including kayaking, canoeing, rowing and swimming). In recent years[date missing] however recreational use of the river is threatened by high levels of pollution in its lower stretches. The upper reaches remain relatively healthy.
The annual Moomba festival celebrates the Yarra River's increasing cultural significance to Melbourne.
